"I was 13 at a summer camp and the prettiest girl I'd ever seen walked right up to me and said, 'Black is a good color on you.'"
So starts the mesmerizing account of Kevin Walsh and the girl who would end up saving his life.
Kevin and the girl – Blake – became friends, exchanged AIM screen names (because that's what kids did those days) and when they went home kept in contact for a little bit.
"I can promise you that not a day went by that I didn't think about that girl," he wrote on Quora. "Even now I'm not sure I can say why — something about her just stayed with me."
High school is rough for everyone, but for Kevin it seemed particularly hard. He developed deep depression.
But on the day he planned to commit suicide, a miracle happened.
"Somewhere between 5 and 10 seconds before I would have committed suicide, my phone rang. I checked the caller ID - I couldn't die not knowing. It was a number I didn't recognize, so I picked up and it was her.
"I asked her what was up and she said she just felt like she had to call me. At that point it had been a year since we had spoken, and at that moment she just had to call. Long story short, she pried, I spilled the beans and she talked me out of it. I mean she literally said 'What? Don't do that.' And that was that.
"She made me promise to call her the next day, and we hung up."
That night Kevin started writing words he would use to propose, and 10 years later he did just that.
"I am so overcome with gratefulness for the perseverance he showed, bidding his time for 10 years, waiting for the stars to align," Blake wrote.
Blake and Kevin married fall of 2016.
"6 months ago, following a whirlwind romance and engagement that puts any Sparks novel to shame, I tied my soul to KJ," Blake wrote. "Our decision to get married and brief engagement was met with raised eyebrows. To us, however, nothing could have been more clear. Life with my husband (still tickles me pink to say that word!) is an adventure- one marked with the incredible comfort of knowing that in all endeavours I am with my best buddy."
Although they hadn't talked for a year, Brooke called Kevin on that fateful day 10 years ago just because she felt like she should. Trust those little moments that prompt you to do something kind and act on them. You never know – it might just save a life.
